Season Outlook
With a total of nine first-year players on the squad, veteran coach Ian Fuge didn’t anticipate the level of success the Cougars women’s soccer team would achieve last season. After finishing the season with a perfect record of 10-0 and earning the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) gold medal, the team went on to the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) national championships to capture a silver medal.
The core of the team remains intact, with the big exception of Mo Choptain, last season’s team captain, who has finished her five year run at Mount Royal. Thirteen players will be returning including award winning defender Ashley Dixon and striker Brittany Ahearn, who tied the school’s record for the most goals scored in the regular season. Third-year nursing students Chelsey Ruckdashel and Kali Holtan will continue to anchor the league’s best defensive line, and Fuge anticipates breakout years from second-year players Kim Kuijper, Kelsey Sereda, Corrine Guichon, and Kim Nielsen.
New recruits including Arika Ness, Tina Basi, Jackie Leach and Samantha Humphries will be looked to fill out a strong team. Ness, described as a strong and fast player, will probably step into a starting position on defense, while Basi, a former Cougar athlete, will be expected to hold down a starting midfield position. Leach and Humphries, both from the Jaguars Alberta Major League, are anticipated to make an impact in the Cougars midfield.
Improved team skill, speed and fitness should all result in a high tempo style of play for the Cougars this year. This team has great potential entering the season and will rely heavily on the development of their new recruits as well as the talent of its veterans to translate that potential into wins. With head coach Ian Fuge at the helm, Mount Royal will once again be one of the teams to watch.
